The Advantage of Porcelain Tiles
- June 29, 2020
Porcelain tiles are made in a very similar way to ceramic tiles, however there are some differences that provide additional qualities to the material. The body of the tile is made up of a mix of finely powdered clays and mineral aggregates which are pressed and then fired in a kiln. Porcelain tiles are pressed at a higher pressue and fired at much higher temperatures than ceramic, making them denser and much less porous. The high temperatures turn the tile into a very hard glass like substance – this process is called vitrification and it makes the tile extremely strong, as well as resistant to chemicals and thermal shock.
There are two types of porcelain tile; through bodied and glazed. Glazed tiles have a decorative surface added during the manufacturing process, this provides the manufacturer with the opportunity to create very realistic stone and wood effect tiles. This type of porcelain has all the same attributes as through-bodied porcelain, apart from its wear rating. As the colour is the same throughout the surface and body of a through-bodied, or unglazed, porcelain tile any scratches or chips will be extremely hard to see. A glazed porcelain tile is strong and dense, but will eventually show signs of wear when the glaze wears out, many decades after installation.
Durability – Compared to other popular materials used to make floors and walls, porcelain tile has a significantly longer life span.
Fire resistant – Porcelain tile is fireproof. It won’t burn, produce smoke or any toxic fumes.
Moisture resistant – Perfect for bathrooms or other areas that come into contact with water, porcelain tile has a less than 0.5% moisture absorption rate.
Tread wear and abrasion resistant – Porcelain tile’s durability makes it an excellent choice for floors that see a great deal of foot traffic and daily wear and tear.
Slip resistant – Porcelain tile surfaces are often made with a glaze that includes an abrasive grit. These tiles add significant traction to avoid slips and falls.
Frost resistant – Because of their durability, porcelain tiles are also perfect for exterior uses and can withstand the harsh elements of the winter season.
Thermal shock resistant – Properly installed, a porcelain tile floor will not buckle or break during extreme temperatures.
Easy to maintain and stain resistant – Keeping a porcelain tile floor clean merely requires a bit of sweeping and mopping.
Chemical resistant – Common household products that contain harsh chemical agents won’t damage or stain porcelain tile.
Maintains color – Porcelain tile doesn’t fade or change color even when exposed to direct sunlight for extended periods of time, so are great for outdoor structures.
Sanitary – Porcelain tile is also very hygienic, so is regularly recommended for use in places where sanitary standards are of extreme importance.
